After meeting with Lammy, Becirovic warns of ongoing threat to Bosnia's stability
Denis Becirovic, a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, addressed the public on Wednesday following a meeting with David Lammy, the UK's Foreign Secretary, who is on an official visit to BiH. Becirovic emphasised the UK's proven friendship with BiH and thanked Lammy for his direct engagement regarding the country's situation.
Becirovic announced his upcoming visit to London for further talks with UK officials, highlighting his active role in legal, diplomatic, and political efforts both domestically and internationally. He reiterated the serious threat facing BiH, urging institutions not to underestimate the danger.
"The institutions of BiH must not relax because the situation is still very serious. However, it is very important that the noose is tightened around fugitives from justice day by day. It is now clear to everyone that [Republika Srpska entity President Milorad] Dodik and his anti-state organised group have been preparing anti-Dayton and anti-constitutional acts for years. This series of anti-Dayton acts did not arise only in March of this year and was not caused by the actions of the judiciary of BiH and the High Representative. I have factually and continuously informed the most important European and world centres of power about these dangers, and it has been shown that what I told them, especially in the last two years, was correct," Becirovic stated.
He informed Lammy about the security situation, describing it as the most severe attack on BiH's constitutional order and stability since the Dayton Agreement.
"The coup d'état in BiH is still ongoing, and this has been confirmed by numerous centres of power. Dodik and his associates have attacked the constitutional order and the foundations of the Dayton Agreement. It is a criminal offence of attacking the constitutional order, and there are elements to talk about an armed rebellion. The leadership of the RS entity is even provoking the danger of an armed conflict between the legal state institutions of BiH and the entity police. On March 7 of this year, a conflict was barely avoided when the entity police tried to occupy the SIPA building. Also, on April 24 of this year, we witnessed that the irresponsible president of the RS entity is ready to sacrifice the lives of police officers and peace for his own position. Let's not forget that the same politician threatened to surround the barracks of the Armed Forces of BiH in 2021," Becirovic warned.
He expressed concern about Dodik's "war-mongering narrative" and the potential for catastrophe. He praised Lammy's clear message of UK support for BiH's independence, sovereignty, and unity, as well as support for the High Representative and the Constitutional Court of BiH. Becirovic also highlighted the importance of messages delivered at the UN Security Council.
Becirovic emphasised that the attacks on key institutions defending the Dayton Agreement and the BiH Constitution, such as the High Representative and the Constitutional Court, are not coincidental. He also mentioned that he presented several proposals for the coming period and expressed hope that some of them would be implemented, referencing existing UK sanctions against those undermining peace and the constitutional order in BiH.
