According to data from the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina, air quality in Sarajevo has been rated as critically polluted at all monitoring stations. The Sarajevo Canton Public Health Institute has issued health recommendations for residents in response to the alarming conditions.
The air in all parts of Sarajevo Canton has been classified as highly polluted or extremely polluted, based on average PM2.5 and PM10 particle concentrations over the past 24 hours. Current forecasts from the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute indicate stable weather conditions with fog, weak winds, and temperature inversions during morning and evening hours. These factors are expected to maintain poor air quality in the coming days.
Exposure to high concentrations of pollutants can cause respiratory issues across all population groups. Vulnerable individuals, including untreated chronic patients, may experience serious health deterioration.
Health authorities recommend that all residents avoid movement and outdoor activities in urban areas. Strenuous activities and recreational exercises should be suspended. If outdoor presence is unavoidable, using specialized face masks with protective respiratory filters, such as FFP2 or FFP3 (or N95 and N99 by American standards), is advised. However, these masks are intended for short-term use and do not provide complete protection from air pollution. Residents are also encouraged to spend time in natural, mountainous environments around Sarajevo.
The Public Health Institute announced that citizens are urged to stay informed by following official updates on air quality measurements and weather forecasts.
