In a conversation with Alexander Payne, the celebrated American director and longtime friend of Sarajevo, much was revealed about his connection with the Bosnian capital and the Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF). Payne visited Sarajevo for the first time nineteen years ago, and has returned three times so far, twice as a participant in the festival.

When asked about the changes he noticed in the city, Payne responds cautiously, admitting that his visits only last a few days, making it difficult to gain a deeper understanding of the city's evolution. However, he notices clear differences in the functionality of the city, emphasizing that in 2005, Sarajevo was in the process of recovery, while today he sees a more polished, developed city.

As for the festival itself, Payne speaks wistfully of the early days, when the SFF was in its growth phase and the atmosphere was filled with excitement and hospitality. “Twenty years later, the festival feels much more polished,” Payne said, adding that while the festival has become more professional, it hasn't lost the warmth and intimacy that makes it special.

According to Payne, the Sarajevo Film Festival is not only a film event but also an experience that every visitor takes with them. He believes that everyone who was part of the festival becomes its ambassador, spreading the good word about Sarajevo and the festival around the world. He admits that he has become an ambassador of the festival and that he is happy to recommend fellow filmmakers to visit Sarajevo.

Although he didn't have much time to explore the city during this visit, Payne expresses his desire to return to Sarajevo one day outside of festival duties to get to know the city and the surrounding country better. “I would like to visit Bosnia a bit,” Payne said, adding that he has visited Mostar before, but would like to see other parts of the country as well.

His role as ambassador of the Sarajevo Film Festival shows how important this festival has become not only for the film industry, but also for promoting Sarajevo as a cultural and tourist destination.
