Arrests in Tuzla Pensioners’ Home fire probe: Ex-director detained

Mirsad Bakalovic, the former director of the Pensioners’ Home in Tuzla, who resigned following the devastating fire at the institution, was arrested on Tuesday by officers of the Police Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tuzla Canton (MUP TK).

This information was confirmed to N1 by the Tuzla Canton Prosecutor's Office.

The Prosecutor’s Office stated that another individual was also arrested alongside Bakalovic on the orders of the Canton Prosecutor.

"Police officers of the Police Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tuzla Canton, today, 16.12.2025, within the scope of the investigation into the fire at the Pensioners’ Home in Tuzla, detained M.B. and Z.R.H., both from Tuzla, on the order of the Cantonal Prosecutor. They will be handed over to the Cantonal Prosecutor for further action. The investigation led by the Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office is ongoing, and more information will be released by the competent Prosecutor's Office," the MUP TK stated.

The arrests follow the ongoing investigation into the fire that recently struck the Tuzla Pensioners’ Home. The detained individuals are being charged with professional negligence and failures in their duties.

The fire, which occurred in November, tragically resulted in the deaths of 17 residents, with several other people suffering serious or minor injuries.
