Becirovic condemns Serbia over state honors for convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic

Becirovic warned that organizing such honors for a legally convicted architect of the genocide against Bosniaks deeply insults victims and aligns Serbia's state leadership with one of the worst butchers in European history, carrying severe consequences for regional stability.

Becirovic emphasized that glorifying Mladic constitutes a direct assault on the fundamental values of the United Nations and the European Union, running counter to the principles of a state aspiring to EU membership. He noted that modern Europe was built upon the strict condemnation of war criminals rather than their celebration, drawing a parallel to the post-World War II Nuremberg and Tokyo trials where such veneration was unthinkable.

The chairman underscored that no amount of state or military honors can alter final international court judgments convicting Mladic for genocide in Srebrenica, crimes against humanity, and the terrorization of Sarajevo. Urging international bodies, including the EU, the Council of Europe, and the UN, to move past silence and take concrete steps against institutionalized glorification, Becirovic concluded that regional peace relies on truth, justice, and respect for victims rather than the rehabilitation of convicted perpetrators.
