Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Bosniak Presidency member Denis Becirovic is visiting NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels from where the two addressed the media.
Stoltenberg addressed the media first and said that the Alliance strongly supports Bosnia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. NATO continues to support the EU-led Operation Althea, under the Berlin Plus arrangement, to maintain a secure environment he said.
He commended Bosnia for the recent progress on the road to membership in the European Union but added they are still deeply concerned about the continued secessionist politics and divisive rhetoric, which he called “reckless and dangerous.”
“It undermines the hard-won progress and stalls reforms that would benefit your people. All political leaders must work together to preserve unity and protect national institutions. It is crucial for peace and security in the country. And for stability in the Western Balkans”, underlined the NATO Secretary General.
Becirovic said that NATO is one of the key factors that ensure peace and stability.
“Full membership in NATO is one of our strategic priorities. We have a very clear legal framework. All formal requirements for BiH to apply for NATO membership have been met. BiH is at the doorstep. We made concrete results in recent years. We adopted three ANPs. In this convocation of the BiH Presidency, we adopted over 40 decisions in the field of defence. All the formal conditions for BiH to be invited for NATO membership have been met,” Becirovic said.
