Becirovic warns UK envoy of threats to Bosnia’s constitutional order

Becirovic warned that attacks on Bosnia’s constitutional order persist, citing recent statements by Republika Srpska authorities refusing to respect rulings of the Constitutional Court and other state institutions. He said such actions threaten peace, stability, and the Dayton Peace Agreement, and described a potential illegal referendum in Republika Srpska on a court ruling as a path to anarchy and destabilisation.

He also informed Pierce about threatening statements from the Russian Embassy in Bosnia and measures he has taken in response, calling them evidence of Russia’s ongoing malign influence in the country and region. Becirovic stressed the need for enhanced cooperation with Bosnia’s strategic partners.

He accused Republika Srpska leader Milorad Dodik of pursuing the long-term dismantling of the Bosnian state through hybrid tactics, including the dehumanisation of Bosniaks via propaganda and hate speech. Such demonisation, he warned, could lead to renewed violence if left unchecked.

Becirovic criticised Serbia’s interference in Bosnia’s judicial processes, reminding that by signing the Dayton Agreement, Serbia committed to respecting Bosnia’s sovereignty. He called for a firm policy toward those undermining peace.

Pierce reaffirmed the UK’s strong support for a sovereign and united Bosnia, stressing the importance of upholding the constitutional order and the rule of law, including consistent implementation of court decisions. Both sides underlined the importance of close Bosnia–UK cooperation to strengthen democratic institutions, the rule of law, stability, and Bosnia’s Euro-Atlantic path.
