BiH Armed Forces mark 20 years: Leaders vow stability, modernisation, and defence of sovereignty

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (OS BiH), the nation’s political and defence leadership celebrated the forces as the country's greatest success story in reform, while simultaneously stressing the critical need for improved funding and preparedness.
Addressing the Central Military Ceremony at the "Rajlovac" Barracks in Sarajevo, the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zeljko Komsic, speaking on behalf of the Presidency as the Supreme Commander, hailed the OS BiH as the "best example that successful reforms are possible in our state."
"This is the homeland of all of us and only we can preserve it," Komsic stated, reflecting on the considerable compromises, knowledge, and determination required to form the forces two decades ago, accomplished with substantial international assistance.
Komsic praised the forces for being a constant factor of stability within BiH and consistently demonstrating readiness to assist citizens. He also underscored the OS BiH's successful execution of its second mission: representing the country in international missions across continents, including Asia and Africa, proving to be a reliable partner to allies.
However, he issued a cautionary note regarding the current global landscape, citing the "bloody war" on the European continent. "This tells us that in today's ruling world order... we must be wise, taking care above all of our interests, and especially of the peace and stability of BiH." He stressed that continuous training and exercises for all personnel must remain a priority, noting that successful joint exercises with NATO countries are moving BiH toward its key foreign policy goal: full NATO membership.
Komsic expressed frustration over the political struggle to secure adequate funding: "I am not sure that politics will always be aware of your role and importance and that it will adequately repay you through improving your status and procuring more modern equipment." He highlighted the delay in approving the current year’s budget and the lack of a prepared budget for the following year, despite the fact that citizens view the OS BiH as a crucial source of support.

Defence Minister promises modernisation
Complementing the Presidency’s message, the Minister of Defence of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zukan Helez, marked the anniversary as a reminder of the journey from integrating formerly opposing armies to becoming a professional force that meets NATO standards and increasingly attracts young people.
Helez promised that the OS BiH would continue to grow and modernise its capacities. "I can proudly say that we are at a high degree of development and that we continue with the equipping and arming of the Armed Forces of BiH. In the coming period, I expect even more equipment," he stated, adding that efforts were underway to keep pace with neighbouring countries in terms of readiness and armament.
The Minister concluded his remarks with a clear promise to all citizens of BiH: "The OS BiH will always be ready to defend the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and borders of BiH."
