The South Bosnian City of Mostar and three city public utility companies have filed a lawsuit against the citizens of Mostar who are members of the Association "Jer nas se tice" ("Because it concerns us") for the "compensation of damage they caused by blocking the Uborak landfill," N1 learned Monday. According to the Association, they received the lawsuit on January 30. They were sued by the City of Mostar and Public Companies “Komos” Mostar, “Parkovi” Mostar and “Deponija” Mostar.
“In their lawsuit, the city of Mostar and the said public companies are asking citizens to pay over 639,000 Bosnian marks (some €320,000) in damages. The lawsuit alleges that the damage was caused by the ‘obstruction of JP Deponija Mostar during the disposal of garbage from the streets of the City of Mostar and surrounding places’ in the period from June 2019 to March 2020, when, as they claim, citizens gathered around the “Jer nas se tice” Association set obstacles in front of the Uborak landfill and supervised the landfill. We hereby stress that the Association Jer nas see tice” will use every existing legal remedy to prove that citizens are not guilty of negligence and irresponsible work of the authorities in solving the problem of the Uborak landfill,” the Association stated.
They pointed out that “the landfill Uborka has been destroying their health for years due to which their loved ones are getting sick and dying, but that this was not enough for the authorities, so they tried to put an end to the fight for the health of all of them with police action.”
“After the police action, harassment, criminal charges, the lawsuit arrived at the Association's address. The citizens who try to protect the health of all citizens of Mostar and the entire Neretva Valley, fighting against an illegal landfill that destroys our river, environment and health, are being punished. This must stop! We hereby announce that we will persevere in our legal fight against the corrupt system, responsible individuals and institutions that have had to react so that the Uborak landfill is finally closed and moved to a new location,” the Association said.
They announced new protests in front of the landfill on Tuesday, February 2, from 6 am to 8 am.
