BiH denied victory as Canada rescue late World Cup draw

In front of a packed and predominantly Canadian crowd at Toronto Stadium, Sergej Barbarez's side took the lead midway through the first half and looked on course for victory before Canada struck late to rescue a point.

Bosnia opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic headed home from a set-piece, scoring his first international goal and giving the Dragons a dream start to their World Cup campaign. The goal rewarded Bosnia's disciplined approach and ability to capitalize on one of their strongest weapons – dead-ball situations.

Canada responded by increasing the pressure and controlling possession for long stretches of the match. The hosts created several chances, particularly from crosses and corner kicks, but Bosnia's defence stood firm for much of the afternoon. Veteran defender Sead Kolasinac produced one of the key moments of the match with a crucial goal-line clearance that preserved Bosnia's advantage.

However, Canada's persistence eventually paid off. Substitute Cyle Larin scored in the 78th minute, finishing a move created by Promise David to level the score at 1-1 and ignite celebrations among the home supporters. The goal secured Canada's first-ever point at a men's FIFA World Cup and denied Bosnia what would have been a memorable opening victory.

The draw leaves both teams with one point after the opening round of Group B matches. Bosnia's next challenge comes on June 18 against Switzerland, while Canada will face Qatar. With two group games remaining, Barbarez's side remains firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stage.

For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the result represented a solid start to only the country's second appearance at a FIFA World Cup, providing a platform to build on in the matches ahead.
