The President of Bosnia’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity, Zeljka Cvijanovic, said that her visit to the United States was very successful and that she had the opportunity to familiarise US officials with the positions of the RS regarding the situation in BiH.
Cvijanovic paid an official visit to the USA last week and met with, among others, the US special envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar. She told the public broadcaster in the RS entity, RTRS, that she also spoke with representatives of the executive and legislative authorities, as well as with representatives of the civil sector in the US.
She added that contacts with the business community in the US were also achieved.
“We expect their arrival in the RS soon and we will work on that,” said Cvijanovic.
Cvijanovic said she believes that it is important that the positions of the RS are also heard because BiH is a multiethnic community and internal misunderstandings between the various constituent ethnic groups in the country are a frequent occurrence.
“It is important that each of us talks to the same interlocutors, and that we explain certain things to them. That is part of my mission and I never went there to speak against Bosniaks or Bosniak politics,” said Cvijanovic.
She stated that her goal is to discuss phenomena that she considers to be dangerous or burdensome for the people of BiH, as well as potential ways out of problematic situations in the country.
“I regret that the opposite often happens when it comes to our colleagues representing Bosniak politics, who whenever they go somewhere, to the same addresses I go to, they always speak against the Republika Srpska and its officials,” she said.
According to her, the US officials she spoke to had different attitudes regarding the situation in BiH.
“There are people who have their own established and rather stereotypical opinions, but that doesn't mean one shouldn't talk to them. And there are also people who are open, who understand very well the essential problems related to BiH and they are always good interlocutors”, Cvijanovic said.
As for her conversation with Escobar, Cvijanovic said that there was agreement on some issues, while they had different positions on other issues.
“We absolutely agree that “Open Balkans” is a good initiative, but we disagree on the issue of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina. But it is important that we talk,” Cvijanovic said.
