Bosnian Foreign Minister Bisera Turkovic received on Tuesday a written response from Brussels to the request for the country's accelerated EU accession. The note which reiterates EU's “unwavering commitment” to Bosnia's EU integration path was signed by High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
“Bosnia and Herzegovina has a credible EU accession perspective, as reaffirmed by the European Council in December 2021. The EU enlargement process is based on clear criteria, which for Bosnia and Herzegovina are outlined in the 14 key priorities from the Commission Opinion on its EU membership application, and concern democracy and functionality, the rule of law, fundamental rights and public administration,” Borrell wrote in the letter as a response to the Foreign Minister's recent notes addressed to the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Charles Michel.
He stressed that the EU stands firmly behind the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and its long historical tradition as a multi-ethic and multi-confessional society.
“Rest assured of our unwavering commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina's EU integration path,” said Borrell.
Turkovic sent the requests on March 2, asking for an accelerated procedure of granting Bosnia and Herzegovina a status of candidate country.
Bosnia and Herzegovina officially applied for the membership in 2016.
