Bosnia and Herzegovina to officially call 2026 general elections

According to CEC member Suad Arnautovic, the elections are scheduled for Sunday, October 4, 2026. The commission has already adopted the majority of implementing acts required for the process. Current data indicates that approximately 3,396,173 voters are registered, though this figure excludes over 10,000 citizens in the Brcko District who have yet to select an entity voting option. Final voter registration numbers are expected to be solidified following a midnight snapshot.

A significant shift in this cycle is the mandatory electronic submission of applications for political parties and independent candidates via the "e-izbori" portal, with the deadline set for May 25. Arnautovic also emphasized strict adherence to election laws, noting that prohibitions against premature campaigning, misuse of public resources, and the dissemination of false information are in effect from the moment elections are called.

The 2026 cycle marks a technological milestone for the country. The CEC is finalizing preparations for biometric voter identification and optical ballot scanning. While the state budget remains unadopted, the Election Law serves as a lex specialis, requiring the Ministry of Finance to allocate necessary funds within 15 days of the election call. These digital advancements are expected to ensure real-time accuracy and allow preliminary results to be published within hours of the polls closing, representing a generational project to strengthen the integrity of the Bosnian electoral process.
