Elmedin Konakovic, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Foreign Minister has confirmed the presence of individuals connected to Russia who were involved in training Moldovan groups in the country. His statement comes amid reports that these individuals aimed to influence election processes in Moldova and potentially disrupt public gatherings.
“We had individuals acting on behalf of the Russian Federation, training Moldovan teams here. While I can’t confirm if these were military training exercises, there is evidence of activities related to organizing protests or public demonstrations,” Konakovic said. He added that this highlights the ongoing negative influence of Russia in Europe, particularly in the Balkans, and stressed that Bosnia needs support from European partners to counter these threats.
Konakovic's remarks came in the wake of reports from Moldovan media alleging that training camps for Moldovan operatives were located in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, Bosnia’s Minister of Security, Nenad Nesic, denied the existence of such camps, stating that no evidence has been provided by Moldovan authorities or any other international agency.
“A training camp is not something that can be easily hidden. If such a camp existed, we would have been officially notified by Moldova. We’ve received no formal information or protests,” Nesic said, emphasizing that any serious issue like this would be addressed through international police cooperation, not media speculation.
Nesic also pointed out that Bosnia hosts international security forces, including EUFOR and NATO, ensuring stability. He expressed confidence that if such camps existed, they would have been identified by US intelligence agencies long ago.
The controversy continues to stir debates within the country, as concerns about Russian influence and regional stability remain at the forefront.
