Bosnia foreign trade deficit surges past 9.3 billion marks despite rising exports
Bosnia and Herzegovina experienced continued expansion in foreign trade during the first eight months of the year, alongside a widening trade deficit. Data released by the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina shows exports reached 11.8 billion Bosnian marks (approx. € 6.03 billion) between January and August, a six percent increase compared with the same period last year, while imports grew by 7.5 percent to exceed 21.1 billion marks (approx. € 10.79 billion).
These commercial movements generated a foreign trade deficit of 9.33 billion marks (approx. € 4.77 billion), with export-to-import coverage dropping to 55.8 percent.
The European Union maintained its position as the country's primary trading partner. Exports to EU member states rose by 10.2 percent to 9.05 billion marks (approx. € 4.63 billion), while imports from the bloc increased by 8.2 percent to 12.36 billion marks (approx. € 6.32 billion). Export-to-import coverage for EU trade reached 72.8 percent, underscoring the domestic economy's strong orientation towards European markets.
Trade within the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) region showed more subdued figures. Exports to CEFTA members dropped by 3.8 percent to 1.84 billion marks (approx. € 940.78 million), while imports experienced a modest 0.5 percent rise to 2.45 billion marks (approx. € 1.25 billion). Export-to-import coverage for the CEFTA region stood at 75.3 percent.
The statistical figures demonstrate sustained growth for Bosnian exports, particularly across the European Union, while highlighting the persistent economic challenge of a high national trade deficit.
