This year's Transparency International (TI) survey shows that Bosnia ranks the worst in the region according to the corruption perception index, and only Russia has a worse result than BiH in the entire Europe.
Despite receiving one point more on the scale from 0 to 100 as compared to last year, 35 points still means it falls behind in comparison to all previous years. Thus this result still keeps BiH at the bottom of the region and in 108th place in the world out of 180 surveyed countries.
The main reason cited is the dysfunctional rule of law, pervasive corruption in conditions of general democratic decline and attacks on media freedom and civil society, which supervise the work of the authorities and play an important role in detecting and suppressing corruption, according to TI.
Some countries from this region have made significant progress in the last ten years in the fight against corruption, among them are Moldova, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Kosovo.
