An increase in the number of divorced marriages was recorded in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thus, 1,608 divorces were recorded last year, 218 more than in 2022. The data are not optimistic even when looking at the number of marriages. A total of 12,780 new marriages were recorded last year, which is 265 less than in 2022. Compared to 2017, the number of marriages is lower by as much as seven thousand.
The decision to divorce is most often made by couples in their forties, data show. Statistics show that newlyweds between the age of 20 and 28, get one divorce per every three marriages.
Also, for decades, demographers have been warning that Bosnia is constantly recording a negative birth rate. Thus, last year, 25,807 people had died, while 18,344 babies were born, the data of the BiH Statistics Agency show. The average age of the deceased was 77. That average was 73 in 2013.
Due to all these trends, the number of BiH inhabitants is decreasing. Research predicts that by 2060 BiH will have only 1.7 million inhabitants. At the same time, the number of people over 65 will increase from 15% to 45%.
