Bosniak Presidency member: No one who glorifies fascism has the right to mark Victory Day

In a strongly worded message, Becirovic emphasised the historic role of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s anti-fascist fighters during the Second World War.

"Bosnian-Herzegovinian anti-fascists were a proud and significant part of the global coalition that defeated fascism. It is historically inaccurate and morally wrong to equate the anti-fascist Partisan movement with the domestic fascist forces such as the Chetniks and Ustaše. Those in BiH public office who glorify fascist and criminal ideologies have no legitimacy to commemorate Victory Day. They do not represent the values of anti-fascism but rather promote the ideologies that were decisively defeated," Becirovic stated.

He noted that alongside Victory Day, May 9 is also observed as Europe Day, which marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration — a founding moment for the European Union based on principles of peace, cooperation, and unity among nations.

"Europe Day reminds us that the European project was built on the ruins of war, with a vision of lasting peace, solidarity, and collective progress. These are the values Bosnia and Herzegovina must continue to uphold as a future member of the European family," he said.

Becirovic also paid tribute to Golden Lilies Day, commemorating those who defended the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 1992–1995 war.

"May 9 is a day to remember the bravery of those who served in the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina — the only legitimate and internationally recognised armed force during the war. They defended our state’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and all its citizens with honour and courage. The Golden Lilies, as they are known, stood united across the country, making an immeasurable contribution to the freedom we cherish today," he added.

Becirovic concluded that the legacy of these defenders serves as a lasting source of inspiration for all who value justice, equality, and love for their homeland.
