In the heavily earthquake-damaged cities of Soran and Cobanbey in Syria, two primary schools were officially opened, funded by the Muslim charity organization 'Merhamet' and the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The construction of these schools was also supported by the Bosnian cities of Visoko, Jajce, and Travnik.

The opening ceremony was attended by the president of HO ‘Merhamet’ MDD, Kenan Vrbanjac, general secretary Sidik Azdahic, and the mayor of Visoko, Mirza Ganic.

“The construction of the schools in Soran and Cobanbey cost $152,520, or 277,335 BAM. ‘Merhamet’ also provided funds for equipping the schools with necessary furniture. Both schools are named ‘Bosnia and Herzegovina’ as a token of gratitude from the local authorities and residents towards our country and its citizens who showed solidarity with the earthquake victims,” said Kenan Vrbanjac.

According to him, the school in Soran has a capacity of 1,050 students, while the school in Cobanbey can accommodate 480 students.

“Most of the students attending these schools are orphans, which particularly motivated us to provide them with new educational facilities,” Vrbanjac emphasized.

A year ago, ‘Merhamet’ signed an agreement with its Turkish partner organization IHH to build the two schools, as well as 42 houses for earthquake survivors and a mosque. The total project value is around 3 million BAM, with the Islamic Community in BiH contributing 2.1 million.

Vrbanjac noted that the completion of the 42 houses in Idlib, on an area of about 25 dunams, is expected in August, and the mosque is to be finished by the end of this year.

“We are very grateful to the Islamic Community in BiH, led by Grand Mufti Husein Kavazovic, for their trust in ‘Merhamet’ and for joining us in this challenging but very important and humanitarian project. We are also grateful to Bosnians and Herzegovinians who have made a significant contribution, showing once again their big hearts and readiness to help those in need,” concluded Vrbanjac.

He reminded that ‘Merhamet’ and the Islamic Community immediately started collecting aid for Turkey and Syria after the catastrophic earthquake.
