In the heart of Syria's conflict-ravaged northwest, near Idlib, a new chapter of hope has begun for displaced families. Through a collaborative initiative funded by the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the humanitarian organization "Merhamet," and Turkey's IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation, a community named Bosanska mahala (Bosnian Quarter) has been established.
The project features 42 homes providing shelter for 212 individuals, many of whom are orphans. Streets in the community bear symbolic names such as Bosanska ulica (Bosnian Street) and Alija Izetbegovic Square, honouring the late Bosnian leader and symbol of resilience.
The initiative extends beyond housing, with the construction of two schools named after Bosnia and Herzegovina, capable of accommodating 1,500 students. A newly built mosque, Dzamija bosanskih sehida (Mosque of Bosnian Martyrs), stands as a spiritual and architectural centerpiece in the town of Soran, replacing those lost in recent earthquakes.
At the mosque’s opening on November 22, 2024, Ibrahim Malanovic, representing Bosnia’s Islamic Community, led the first Friday prayers. He highlighted the project’s origins in the earthquake relief efforts of 2023, which raised over 3 million Bosnian marks (some €1.5 million), including 2.1 million marks (some €1 million) from the Islamic Community.
“This mosque, these homes, and schools are a gift to the people of Syria,” Malanovic stated, expressing hope that contributors’ generosity would be rewarded. Merhamet President Kenan Vrbanjac emphasized solidarity between Bosnians and Syrians, saying, “We honour our martyrs and yours, connecting through shared faith and humanity.”
The effort demonstrates the power of international solidarity, with Syrian officials and families expressing heartfelt gratitude. The initiative stands as a testament to the enduring bonds of compassion and shared faith between the two nations, offering a beacon of hope amidst adversity.
