A team of Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTAC) from the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina (AFBiH), in collaboration with US Special Forces, has successfully completed a multi-day training exercise. The operation was conducted alongside the AFBiH Air Force and Air Defence Brigade and the United States Air Force, employing both AFBiH helicopters and US F-16 fighter jets from Aviano Air Base in Italy.

Over the course of the training, which took place under a range of weather conditions, the participants honed their expertise in coordinating close air support. JTAC personnel practised precision air strike guidance, enhancing interoperability between ground controllers and aerial assets.

According to a statement from the BiH Defence Ministry, all participants expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of the training. The statement underscored the critical role of air support in modern military operations, noting that victory in contemporary warfare often hinges on effective collaboration between ground forces and air units.

The Ministry highlighted the pivotal role of JTACs, known within NATO as forward air controllers, who coordinate with aircraft to execute precise strikes. “Their role involves directing air assets to strike with accuracy, even when operating in close proximity to friendly forces. This requires absolute clarity and unambiguous communication,” the statement read.

Recognising the increasing demands of modern warfare, the AFBiH has steadily developed its JTAC capabilities in recent years. The Ministry noted that AFBiH JTAC teams are regularly participating in international exercises, further enhancing their expertise and strengthening partnerships with allied air forces.

Notably, the AFBiH JTAC team is said to possess greater operational experience in this field than some NATO member states in the region, reflecting Bosnia and Herzegovina's growing proficiency in advanced military tactics.
