Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Defense Minister, Zukan Helez, confirmed that the Ministry of Defense will use its vehicles to distribute election materials for the upcoming local elections.
Helez stated in an interview with N1 that assisting in election processes is a legal obligation of the Ministry of Defense. He explained that the tenders the Central Election Commission (CIK) attempted to complete could not be finalized since the state budget was only passed in July.
The minister emphasized that these decisions fall under his exclusive authority, and although his deputy, Aleksandar Goganovic, has been involved, he does not have the authority over the matter. “This is entirely within my jurisdiction, and the sectors of the Armed Forces have given a positive opinion. We are waiting for the official paperwork, as I want to respect procedures, and then we will begin the operation,” Helez added.
He also mentioned that he had discussed support from EUFOR with Deputy Commander Laszlo Sticz, who offered their assistance. However, Helez believes the ministry can complete the task without EUFOR's help.
Earlier, Deputy Minister Aleksandar Goganovic had stated that he would not support the CIK's request for the Ministry of Defense to distribute election materials, citing his position.
