Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Security Minister, Nenad Nesic, has voiced grave concerns following reports that a minor involved in the recent deadly attack on a police station in Bosanska Krupa may have been influenced by extremist beliefs. In an interview with N1, Nesic condemned religious fanaticism and called for a deeper investigation, particularly into the minor's social media activity and potential familial ties to radical groups.
“There are reports that this boy’s father is affiliated with an extremist religious movement. I find it unacceptable that authorities claim to lack specific information on this, while media sources report the boy was acting out of opposition to the EU and is linked to a Wahhabi group,” Nesic stated. He also stressed the need for accountability, particularly given his own knowledge that the boy’s social media profiles contained significant signs of radical influence.
The Minister expressed strong condemnation of religious fanaticism, regardless of origin, and emphasized the severity of the crime, underscoring that any attack on a police officer is a direct assault on the state.
“This is a terrorist act. We must consider amending our laws, as the maximum sentence for a minor currently stands at only five years,” Nesic said, calling for broader legal reform to better address such cases in the future.
He urged authorities to be transparent with the public about the social media findings concerning the suspect, saying, “I’ve received information that there is extreme religious content present. While nothing can undo the loss of life, we have a duty to prevent such incidents from happening again.”
The Minister further questioned how the minor managed to enter the police station and commit such violence, calling on the Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office to provide a clear explanation. “How did he even enter the police station? It’s unclear to me how he succeeded in fatally attacking one officer and injuring another. There are many questions that the Prosecutor’s Office will need to address,” Nesic said.
As Bosnia grapples with the aftermath of this attack, Nesic reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and stability, asserting that clear communication with the public is essential.
