For more than 70 minutes, Sergej Barbarez's side looked capable of frustrating the Swiss and earning another valuable result after their opening draw against Canada. Bosnia defended resolutely and kept Switzerland's attacking players largely under control. The turning point came in the 74th minute when Swiss substitute Johan Manzambi broke the deadlock just minutes after entering the match.
Bosnia's situation worsened six minutes later when defender Tarik Muharemovic was shown a red card, leaving his team to play the closing stages with ten men.
Switzerland quickly took advantage of the extra space. Ruben Vargas doubled the lead before Manzambi grabbed his second goal of the evening.
Bosnia managed a late consolation through substitute Ermin Mahmic, but Granit Xhaka converted a stoppage-time penalty to complete a convincing 4-1 win for the Swiss.
The result leaves Switzerland on four points and in a strong position to advance to the Round of 32, while Bosnia remain on one point and must now defeat Qatar in their final group match to keep their qualification hopes alive. Despite the heavy scoreline, Bosnia can take encouragement from their disciplined display for much of the match, with the contest remaining level until the final quarter-hour before Switzerland's substitutes made the difference.
Barbarez said his team must recover quickly and focus on the decisive clash with Qatar, where Bosnia will be fighting to keep their World Cup dream alive.
