The British Embassy in Sarajevo has commented on recent threats by the Republika Srpska government to ‘peacefully disassociate’ from Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Embassy emphasized that the threats are not only dangerous; they are based on a series of false premises:

“· It is not true that the Republika Srpska is endangered, under threat or unwelcome. The Republika Srpska is a legitimate and integral part of BiH.

· It is not true that Republika Srpska can secede from BiH or can exist outside of the State. The Republika Srpska exists only as an entity within BiH. Its existence is a result of and guaranteed under the Dayton Peace Agreement.

· It is not true that Mr Dodik’s actions are in any way protecting the Republika Srpska or the people who live there. The President of Republika Srpska knows the legal facts well. To try to control any population through fear and division is wrong.

· It is not true that politics in BiH needs to be this way. There are people who want to lead through collaboration, cooperation and dialogue. We urge all leaders to resist these false narratives and to refocus on working together to deliver a better future for all.”

Milorad Dodik, President of Bosnia's Republika Srpska entity, announced on Thursday in Bratunac his intention to propose a peaceful dissolution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, arguing that the current arrangement is dysfunctional.
