The team of the Sarajevo Canton Professional Fire Brigade had a calm New Year’s night, apart from a few minor, almost negligible interventions, and there were no serious incidents, duty dispatcher Samir Sabanovic said.

“This was one of the quieter New Year’s nights, as major celebrations usually bring an increased number of fires,” Sabanovic told FENA.

He added that for firefighters, there is no difference whether it is New Year’s Day, Eid, Christmas or May 1, as they are available to citizens 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

“We are always ready and on alert. It takes us just one minute to leave the base and head to an intervention, at any time of day or night, to save people and their property,” Sabanovic emphasized.

According to him, in keeping with tradition, Sarajevo Mayor Samir Avdic also visited the firefighters on New Year’s night and congratulated them on the arrival of 2026.

Although, as he noted, society often does not sufficiently recognize the value and difficulty of the high-risk work performed by firefighters, members of the Mountain Rescue Service, the police and emergency medical services, there are still those who appreciate their self-sacrifice and dedication.

“Anyone who chooses this profession must be aware that they are sacrificing themselves for the benefit of the community,” said Avdic, a recipient of the Gold Badge of Civil Protection of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
