The celebration of January 9 as the “Day of Republika of Srpska”, which was declared unconstitutional by Bosnia’s Constitutional Court, has already begun a day early in Banja Luka.
Numerous officials in the semi-autonomous Republika Srpska (RS) entity laid wreaths at the Memorial to the members of the Army of Republika Srpska at the Sveti Pantelija cemetery.
RS President, Milorad Dodik, said this day is celebrated according to the will of the people, adding that this is the only thing that matters.
“Republika Srpska was formed in peace, there was neither shooting nor war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that is something that bothers many people here in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Dodik said, adding that the people of the RS decided that they want to celebrate the holiday, despite the “shameful” decision of the Constitutional Court, which he said was “politically motivated.”
The celebration will continue in Istocno Sarajevo (East Sarajevo) on Monday, he said.
“Tomorrow we will observe the date again here in Banja Luka, which is dedicated to the glory and day of Saint Stephen and on which the RS was formed. After that, we will move to Istocno Sarajevo, there on Sokolac we will also lay wreaths and flowers on the coat of arms, and later at 2:00 p.m. at a solemn ceremony in Lukavica, we will continue celebrating the RS Day. RS today is stable and safe and has its own path and knows what it wants,” said Dodik.
The chairman of Bosnia’s tripartite Presidency and member of Dodik’s Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), Zeljka Cvijanovic, also attended the gathering in Banjaluka.
“We have faith in the RS and its ability to develop, in the strength of the people and institutions. January 9 is the day of the will of the people and we celebrate it within our full rights and in full capacity,” she said.
