Marija Pejcinovic-Buric, the Council of Europe Secretary-General, said on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide that tragedy cannot be undone but that the memory of Srebrenica and honouring the victims must continue.
“The genocide of Srebrenica was the most horrible atrocity in Europe since the Second World War, one we all thought impossible,” said Pejcinovic-Buric.
She stressed that nationalism, hatred and ethnic cleansing led to death, destruction and human rights violations on a massive scale on the European continent, while the “immeasurable suffering of the families and loved ones of those killed lasts until present day.”
“The tragedy cannot be undone. However, we must continue to remember Srebrenica, honour the victims and work for tolerance among the peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina and of all of Europe so that such an atrocity may never happen again,” she added.
Nineteen more victims of Srebrenica massacre, which two international courts ruled was an act of genocide, will be buried on Sunday at the Potocari memorial with thousands more victims who were found and identified in the past years.
The youngest among them will be Azmir Osmanovic who was 16 at the moment of his death in 1995.
