The Vlakovo city cemetery near Sarajevo became a poignant symbol of solidarity as citizens gathered to bid farewell to Abdi Selam Zaki Islash on Tuesday afternoon. The 21-year-old Palestinian, who had no surviving family, was laid to rest in plot M107, surrounded not by relatives, but by a compassionate crowd of Sarajevans and local Palestinians.
The story of Abdi Selam Zaki Islash is a tragic one. According to those familiar with his case, Abdi's family perished, leaving him alone in the world. Yet, in his final moments, he was not abandoned. The citizens of Sarajevo, predominantly the youth, came together to ensure he received a dignified burial.
In attendance were notable figures such as Majed Maarouf, president of the Palestinian community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Rezeq Namoora, the Palestinian ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both expressed deep gratitude to the people of Sarajevo, who learned of Abdi's plight through an appeal circulated on social media.
“I would like to thank all the people of Sarajevo who responded and enhanced the funeral with their presence and shared this pain with us. Thank you on behalf of the deceased and all Palestinians,” said Majed Maarouf to N1.
This heartfelt outpouring of support underscores the compassionate spirit of Sarajevo's citizens, who stepped in as Abdi's family in his time of need. Their presence at the funeral not only honoured Abdi's life but also served as a powerful testament to the enduring bonds of humanity that transcend borders and hardships.
