Speaking at the opening of the International Economic Fair in Mostar, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic spoke about the relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Croatia, BiH's path to the EU and the Southern Interconnection project.
Plenkovic praised the Council of Ministers of BiH headed by Borjana Kristo for the EU’s decision to open membership negotiations with the country.
“We are two neighbouring, friendly countries”, he said, stressing that Croatia respects Bosnia and Herzegovina and wants to help it.
“That path will be demanding, but the door to EU enlargement has opened again. You have now caught up with other countries in Southeast Europe. Serbia has advanced with Montenegro and has great experience, and then other countries follow. This is a key turning point decision for Bosnia and Herzegovina,” he said.
He then spoke about the Southern Interconnection project, saying that the interests of the Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina must be protected.
“Croatia is ready to support it financially, and that is why I want to reach an agreement within BiH that will respect the strategic interests of everyone, especially the Federation and the Croat people within the FBiH”, he said.
The leader of the Croat Democratic Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ BiH), Dragan Covic, does not want the Southern Interconnection project to be implemented by the public company of the Federation (FBiH) entity and requests the establishment of a separate economic entity based in Mostar, whose founders would be cantons with a majority Croat population. The US Embassy in BiH strongly opposed this proposal.
