The memorial plaque dedicated to convicted Bosnian Serb war criminal, Ratko Mladic, which was destroyed on Sunday morning in Istocno Sarajevo (East Sarajevo), was swiftly replaced only hours later.
The plaque was destroyed several times in the past but the local authorities keep putting it up again. The plaque evokes painful memories and anger from Sarajevo, which was under siege by Mladic’s forces for nearly four years during the war.
Mladic, the wartime commander of the Army of the Republika Srpska (VRS), was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Hague Tribunal for genocide and crimes against humanity against non-Serbs committed during the war.
