The president of BiH's Republika Srpska (RS) entity Milorad Dodik, who is also the leader of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), announced that he will be his party’s candidate for the top position in RS in next year’s elections. This is despite the BiH court sentencing him to one year in prison and barring him from serving as RS president for six years in a first-instance verdict.

Dodik said that the decision has already been made and that his candidacy has been confirmed. “The abuse of processes at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina will end with us initiating the election of a new Republika Srpska Electoral Commission in May and conducting elections at the RS level in accordance with our Election Law,” Dodik said in an interview with Politika, a Belgrade-based newspaper.

He added that “some will make a fuss about this in Europe, but it doesn’t matter what they think; it is the people's right to choose.”

“The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina has usurped authority—what do they have to do with elections in RS? By taking on too many responsibilities, they have overwhelmed themselves. They have taken on too much and cannot handle it,” Dodik stated.
