Dodik wants to negotiate now: "RS prepared to temporarily suspend recent laws"
The President of BiH's Republika Srpska (RS) entity, Milorad Dodik, commented on the political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasizing that he is ready for dialogue and discussion. He stated that he is even prepared to freeze the disputed laws recently passed in the National Assembly of Republika Srpska (NSRS).
"A frequent recurrence to fundamental principles is absolutely necessary to preserve the blessings of liberty," are the words of Benjamin Franklin. A frequent recurrence to the Constitution of BiH constitutes the sole guarantee of BiH’s survival and functionality. Therefore, I welcome the messages of President Macron, Commissioner Kallas, and all those who call for respect for the constitutional order", Dodik wrote on X.
"However, if Ms. Kaja Kallas considers the constitutional order to be that which was imposed by Smith, then we fail to understand one another. That constitutional order is enshrined in Annex 4 of the Dayton Agreement. It is precisely this constitutional order that Christian Schmidt has undermined through his interventions, while over the years, every High Representative has eroded the foundations of constitutionality", he added.
Dodik argued that he and the RS "consistently defended the constitution".
"Nevertheless, it is naïve to believe that merely pointing out injustice will suffice to resolve it. The only solution lies in the annulment of Christian Schmidt’s voluntarism and all the decisions he has imposed. In such a case, the Republic of Srpska is prepared to temporarily suspend the laws recently adopted by the National Assembly. We wish to provide an opportunity for dialogue and agreement among the three peoples. I extend an invitation to such an agreement even now. As we agree among ourselves, so it shall be for us—not for others", he posted.
It is important to note that his statement comes after sanctions were imposed on him by Austria and Germany, but also after Bosnia and Herzegovina received support from Emmanuel Macron and Kaja Kallas.
Namely, Macron, after his meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, said that he gives full support to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, visited Bosnia and Herzegovina a few days ago, where she reiterated the EU’s commitment to the sovereignty and integrity of BiH, but also emphasized the need to uphold the rule of law as a condition for the country’s path to EU membership.
