The second round of Croatia's presidential elections is underway, with voters choosing between HDZ candidate Dragan Primorac and incumbent president Zoran Milanovic of the SDP. Croatian citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) can also cast their votes at seven locations, including 20 polling stations in Mostar, where HDZ BiH leader Dragan Covic voted this morning at 7 am.
Following his vote, Covic spoke to the media, notably praising Milanovic while avoiding any mention of Primorac. He emphasized the importance of Croatia maintaining balanced policies toward BiH and the position of Croats there, which, he said, had been ensured over the past five to six years.
When asked about his cooperation with Milanovic, Covic described it as excellent and expressed hope for its continuation regardless of the election outcome. “I am confident that Croatia will continue to support BiH's European path and internal stability,” Covic stated.
On Milanovic’s approach to BiH, Covic noted that all Croatian political parties share similar views on the issues facing BiH and the rights of Croats. He commended Milanovic’s efforts in advocating for Croat representation in BiH’s Presidency and House of Peoples.
Interestingly, Covic did not mention Primorac, who was in the lead in BiH during the first election round but lagged behind Milanovic, who secured 49.09% of the vote in Croatia compared to Primorac’s 19.35%.
Some speculate that Covic’s shift in tone reflects Milanovic’s significant lead, aiming to maintain good relations with the potential re-elected president.
The State Electoral Commission (DIP) reported a turnout of 13.80% by 11:30 a.m., slightly higher than the first round. Voting results are expected at 8:00 pm, an hour after polls close.
