East Sarajevo mayor calls for tougher sentencing after gang shootings

Speaking to N1 television, Cosic acknowledged that the recent violence had changed public perception of security.

"We had two shootings in public places. Every time these people committed crimes, the Ministry of Interior and other security agencies did their part. But once the case reaches the prosecutor's office, it decides whether to open an investigation and file charges. Then the courts decide on the punishment," Cosic said.

He argued that Bosnia and Herzegovina should consider tightening its criminal legislation, particularly for repeat offenders.

"Harsher sanctions and tougher sentencing, especially for repeat offenders, must be the end result. That is what will complete the system and ensure such people are removed from the streets and remain behind bars much longer," he said.

Referring to a recent public message directed at criminal groups that drew widespread attention on social media, Cosic defended his remarks.

"I wasn't pleading with anyone. I simply said: 'Stop doing this. The state has the capacity to deal with everyone, and you will pay a heavy price if you cross the red line,'" he said.

Responding to criticism that the statement was symbolic rather than practical, Cosic noted that a mayor has no operational role in policing.

"If someone expected me to put on a uniform and confront criminals myself, they should ask whether I even have that authority," he said.

Asked about allegations of links between criminal groups and police structures, Cosic said he had no knowledge of such connections.

"I do not see links between organized crime and members of the security agencies, either in Republika Srpska or in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina," he said, adding that anyone with evidence against him or any public official should report it to the relevant authorities.

He also praised cooperation between police agencies across Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"It is in the interest of all security agencies that both cities and both entities remain safe. Cooperation has never been the problem," he said.
