Angelina Eichhorst, Director General for Europe in the European Union's Foreign Affairs Service, arrived in BiH and with the head of the EU Delegation in BiH, Johann Sattler, came to the Memorial Centre in Potocari to pay tribute to all the victims of the Srebrenica genocide on behalf of the European Union, and on behalf of the High Representative Joseppa Borrell.

“What happened in this area, 28 years ago, cannot, will not and must never be forgotten. We are also here to reiterate the message that something like this must never happen again. By coming to Potocare, we show our understanding and want to better understand everything that happened, but above all to repeat our commitment that something like this must not happen again,” she told the press.

She recalled that 30 victims of the Srebrenica genocide will finally find their final resting place, Tuesday.

“These were fathers, brothers, friends. The oldest among them is 65, the youngest is 15. It is important to show them respect. We are here to show our respect and share all their pain and suffering with the families and victims. The European Union will always stand by the victims at every moment and absolutely,” she said and noted:

“Those who deny genocide, those who glorify crimes, all those revisionists, it's time for them to show understanding and respect for the victims. I invite them to do so”.

Sattler said that they came today because of the victims.

“We are here to show our respect. The events in Srebrenica are the darkest chapter of the last century on the European continent. Looking at the future perspective, what is extremely important is reconciliation as one of the priorities on the European path, but reconciliation will not come by itself. There must be a basis for reconciliation. The first and basic foundation for reconciliation is justice, that the perpetrators be brought to justice. Unfortunately, there are still those who have not been prosecuted. Secondly, it is necessary for people to come to terms with their past, because without it there is no real future,” he said.
