Election recount for the posts of Republika Srpska President and Vice Presidents, following the reports on alleged irregularities after the October 2 general election, officially commenced at the Sarajevo vote counting centre on Thursday.

Suad Arnautovic, the chairman of Bosnia's top electoral body, dismissed the accusations that this step was illegal. He also noted that the Central Election Commission was assigned with extended competencies in line with the recent amendments to Bosnia's Election Law, imposed by international administrator Christian Schmidt.

“There is no politics and illegal actions here. We are overseeing elections in accordance with law as well as the available indications of burned ballots, marked ballots, irregular packing of electoral material, unused ballots, and we are publicly conducting the recount here,” said Arnautovic.

Head of the vote counting centre Goran Miskovic said they kicked off the ballot recount with the constituencies of Brcko and Bijeljina, adding that they will be working in three shifts.

“As for Doboj, it is planned after Banja Luka and Bijeljina. We need to prepare materials and storage. We're starting off with larger constituencies,” he noted.

The election recount comes after the opposition in Republika Srpska, Bosnia's Serb-majority region, reported electoral fraud to the Central Election Commission, demanding that the race for the post of the Republika Srpska President is annulled.

Opposition candidate Jelena Trivic, according to still unofficial and preliminary results, was losing to Milorad Dodik, the candidate of the ruling SNSD party and still current member of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency.
