Emergency at BHRT: Public broadcaster slashes programming and threatens legal action against Bosnia

The Editorial Board of BHT1 has launched an initiative to file a lawsuit against the State of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as responsible officials in the Parliamentary Assembly and the Council of Ministers, citing non-compliance with the Law on the Public Broadcasting System of Bosnia and Herzegovina that has brought the public broadcaster (BHRT) to the brink of collapse.

In an official statement, the board highlighted that despite years of warnings and demands for legal compliance, competent authorities have failed to offer concrete solutions, leaving BHRT staff unable to maintain regular broadcasting operations.
With BHRT’s bank accounts remaining blocked, the broadcaster warned that upcoming coverage of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team’s matches in the UEFA Nations League is now in serious doubt. The board noted that while staff previously made superhuman efforts to deliver sports and other programming, ongoing administrative barriers and frozen funds have rendered further broadcasts impossible.
Appeals directed at both state and entity-level institutions have yielded no results. The board expressed sharp disappointment over the lack of political support during the ongoing election campaign, pointing out that no political actors have made efforts to unblock the accounts or ensure workers receive their earned salaries.
As a direct consequence of the financial strain, BHT1 announced program reductions beginning Friday, including the suspension of the live afternoon show "BHT1" and the weekend editions of "Jutra za sve". Production teams are currently unable to deploy into the field, preventing news coverage from across the country, with further programming cuts expected in the coming days.
The Editorial Board concluded with an urgent call to relevant state institutions to immediately enact a systemic solution for the collection and distribution of the RTV tax, thereby restoring normal working conditions for BHRT employees.
