Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said in a video message shown at the commemoration of the Srebrenica genocide on Sunday that he will never allow this “black stain on European and world history” to be ignored.
Families buried on Sunday 19 victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide at a commemoration ceremony attended by thousands of those who came to pay respect to more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys killed in Europe’s worst atrocity since WWII.
Erdogan commented on the recent verdict against former Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic, who was sentenced to life for numerous war crimes, including genocide.
“Verdicts cannot bring back those who were lost or heal the wounds in our hearts, but they can play a role in preventing genocide from ever happening again,” Erdogan said.
He urged politicians to reject hate speech, violence and discrimination and instead focus on human values.
“The stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina is important for the Balkans and Europe, and it is our duty to do everything to preserve lasting peace. Turkey will continue to be with the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the future, as before, with prayers that such suffering will not be repeated for anyone,” Erdogan said.
