“We have agreed on a declaration that is different from before—more concise and understandable for citizens. The European Union and the Western Balkans belong to the same family. Enlargement is the best geostrategic investment in peace and stability. Integration of the Western Balkans into the EU is already progressing. Our ambitious plan is extremely important,” said Costa.
He further noted the economic benefits of the plan for the region:
“Citizens in the region will witness doubled economic growth over the next decade. There is no other region where we have invested so much financially and personally. The EU is the largest economic partner of the Western Balkans and will remain its most loyal partner in the future. Of course, we all recognize there are some challenges,” Costa added.
He stressed the importance of maintaining focus on reforms:
“We need to stay focused on reforms. Tonight, we heard frustrations from the region, but they can be overcome. Significant progress has been made, especially in Montenegro and Albania. We should seize this new momentum to create conditions for enlargement because there is no doubt that the future of the Western Balkans lies with us,” Costa concluded.
