Members of the European military peacekeeping mission in Bosnia (EUFOR) are on the ground affected by the fires in Jablanica situated in the south of the country, and are monitoring it from the air so that they can act in the event of its escalation in terms of injury to firefighters and possible medical evacuation, N1 learned on Saturday from Omer Nezic, assistant chief in the Civil and Fire Protection Service, saying that the fire in Jablanica was getting out of control and that it had spread to Mostar.
“The fire threatens to endanger the Blidinje National Park, as well,” said Neziric.
Earlier on Saturday the BiH Ministry of Security requested the urgent adoption of the decision of the BiH Council of Ministers on seeking international assistance in protection and rescue in firefighting, which means organizing an emergency session at which such a decision would be adopted.
As confirmed to N1 by the BiH Ministry of Justice, chaired by Josip Grubesa from the Croat Democratic Party (HDZ BiH), no such request has been submitted so far.
In today's requests, the BiH Security Ministry asked the EUFOR for engagement, however, N1 was told, they started acting even before the request was sent.
The situation is very difficult in the area of Jablanica, Stolac, Siroki Brijeg and Capljina, and now Mostar is also endangered, considering that the fire is spreading towards that city as well.
Efficient firefighting can be realized only from the air and regardless of the fact that the crews of the helicopter squadron of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina are ready to intervene with all the necessary equipment, this activity was not approved by the Presidency of BiH, namely because of Milorad Dodik, the Serb member of the tripartite Presidency.
Jablanica filed a criminal complaint precisely because of that fact.
By preventing fires from being brought under control in this way, Herzegovinian municipalities are threatened.
