The European Union Force in BiH (EUFOR) said it will temporarily increase the size of its force, as a “proactive measure aimed at assisting Bosnia and Herzegovina in the interest of all citizens”.
EUFOR’s capabilities play a crucial role in the continued support to security and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“EUFOR remains an impartial, multinational, and robust force, with the necessary military resources to support the authorities of BiH in ensuring a safe and secure environment for all citizens of BiH. EUFOR remains committed to this task”, the statement said.
The move comes in light of the political crisis in the country following the first-instance verdict against the President of BiH’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity, which prompted the RS National Assembly to adopt a set of laws which include banning the state police and state judiciary from the entity and setting up a parallel justice system.
The Constitutional Court temporarily suspended those laws on Friday. Dodik reacted, saying they will still be implemented in the entity.
The Office of the High Representative of the international community in BiH, Christian Schmidt, welcomed the decision by the Constitutional Court,, saying it “ensures adherence to the country’s constitutional framework and reaffirms the authority of state institutions”.
“The swift action taken by the Constitutional Court highlights the resilience of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s legal system in protection of sovereignty, constitutional order and stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina and safeguarding the rule of law.
The Constitutional Court decisions are clear: all state institutions, including the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA), must continue to operate within the BiH legal framework within their respective mandates and jurisdictions. The integrity and functionality of these institutions are fundamental to maintaining the stability and security of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, an OHR statement said.
“All authorities and political actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina must respect the binding decisions of the Constitutional Court of BiH which has its foundation directly in the Dayton GFAP”, it said.
