The City of Sarajevo got support from European Olympic committees to co-host the 2030 Olympics with Barcelona, according to Sarajevo mayor Benjamina Karic.
The agreement was reached at the session of Olympic committees in Ljubljana, held under the auspices of the Olympic Committee of Slovenia which is marking its 30th anniversary.
“The Olympic Committees of the group of Central and Eastern European countries, headed by group chairman Andrzej Krasnicki, who is also the President of the Polish Olympic Committee, gave full support to the idea of the joint performance,” the mayor wrote on social networks, adding that they expressed support for the reconstruction of the Olympic bobsleigh track on the Trebevic Mountain above Sarajevo as well.
Heads of the Olympic committees in the region, including those in North Macedonia, Albania, Kosovo and Slovenia, also backed the initiative.
Sarajevo hosted Winter Olympic Games in 1984 and was a co-host of the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2019 with the City of Istocno Sarajevo.
So far, Salt Lake City, Vancouver, Sapporo and Barcelona-Pyrenees showed interest in hosting the Winter Olympics in 2030. Ukraine was the latest country to join the contest.
The host will be selected for the first time through the International Olympic Committee's reformed selection process. The potential date as to when the host might be selected is yet to be announced.
