The President of the Municipal Assembly in the eastern town of Srebrenica, Camil Durakovic, submitted the first criminal complaint alleging genocide denial in Bosnia after the new law the High Representative imposed in the country came into force on Wednesday.
The former mayor of Srebrenica posted his complaint against Branimir Djuricic, a journalist working for the public broadcaster in Bosnia’s Serb-majority Republika Srpska (RS) entity, RTRS, on Twitter.

The outgoing High Representative in BiH who is tasked with overseeing the civilian implementation of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement, Valentin Inzko, used his special powers on Friday to impose amendments to the BiH’s Criminal Code which sanction the glorification of war criminals convicted by final and binding judgments, as well as the denial of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

“From the day of the decision to amend the Criminal Code until today, we could hear different political views on the issue itself, but as of today, the law is applicable to the entire territory of BiH. As of today, it will be possible to file criminal charges against those who deny genocide and other crimes,” Durakovic told N1.
“For the first time, we have a legal basis to report those who publicly deny genocide. Yesterday in Srebrenica, the RS veterans’ organization put up posters depicting war criminal Ratko Mladic, whom they called a hero,” he noted.
