This region is one of the few places on the European continent where hundreds of horses live freely, galloping across vast pastures under the open skies of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
These animals are not "true" wild horses in a scientific sense. Instead, they are the descendants of domestic horses released into the wild decades ago by the inhabitants of Livno’s villages when tractors and machinery replaced their labour. Over time, they have adapted to harsh winters, strong winds, and an isolated mountain existence, forming resilient, free communities that now number several hundred individuals.
