Expert analysis: Excessive speed and aging fleet likely factors in fatal Sarajevo tram accident

Kovacevic, a former director of tram traffic with extensive experience in accident reconstruction, described the site as a "triangle" junction with an extremely tight turning radius. According to the expert, the speed limit at this specific curve is strictly 10 km/h. He explained that if a tram traveling from the Railway Station exceeds this limit while turning left, centrifugal force can overcome the physical adhesion between the wheels and the rails, forcing the vehicle to derail to the right.

Beyond speed, Kovacevic highlighted the technical risks associated with the city's older fleet operating on newly laid tracks.

"Old trams essentially have worn wheel. If there is also 'play' or slack in the bogies due to damaged bearings, the vehicle becomes unstable. Under increased speed in a curve, such a vehicle can easily derail," Kovacevic noted.

The expert labelled the aging trams as "ticking time bombs" in traffic, particularly at junctions where the direction of travel changes abruptly. He emphasized that strict adherence to the 10 km/h limit is vital to preventing such catastrophes. He also noted that the concrete barriers at the tram stop are designed to deflect a derailed vehicle; however, the severity of today's consequences suggests that the forces involved were significant.

A formal investigation led by the duty prosecutor and mechanical experts is currently underway to determine the exact technical cause of the tragedy.

One person had died and the other suffered a leg amputation as a result of the accident.
