Farewell to a Mostar legend: Iconic Old Bridge diver Emir Balic dies

The organisation, where Balic was a long-time associate and recipient of the "Mimar of Peace" recognition, bid farewell to him in an emotional message, saying that a man whose name will forever remain intertwined with the Old Bridge, the Neretva and Mostar had passed away.

"He was much more than a famous diver. He was a symbol of a city, its courage, defiance, tradition and unique Mostar spirit," the Centre for Peace said, adding that his dives were not merely sporting feats but part of the city's identity.

In its tribute, the Centre stressed that Balic was one of those rare people who become legends during their lifetime, while also recalling the most difficult periods of his life. They noted that he survived the harsh HVO detention camps, but even after that "found the strength not to allow hatred to conquer his heart."

"From the Old Bridge, he flew towards the Neretva with courage and dignity, and today he has departed into his final silence, leaving behind memories that will not fade. Dear Emir, thank you for every dive, for every story, for the pride you brought to your city," the Centre for Peace said.

Expressing its sincere condolences to his family and friends, the Centre added: "May you be granted eternal peace, and may the soil of Mostar rest lightly upon you."

With Balic's death, Mostar has lost one of its most recognisable symbols - a man whose name has been permanently inscribed in the history of the Old Bridge, the Neretva and the city where he spent his entire life.

In addition to being a renowned diver, Balic embodied courage, defiance, tradition and the authentic spirit of Mostar. His dives from the Old Bridge transcended the boundaries of sporting achievement and became an indelible part of the city's identity, leaving their mark on generations.

Balic competed in official competitions 20 times, with his famous "lasta" dive earning him as many as 13 victories. He finished second on four occasions and took third place three times.
