FBiH entity makes steps to improve status of children born of wartime rape

The Government of Bosnia's Federation entity determined a law proposal on Wednesday, which, if adopted in the Parliament, would provide the children born as a result of rape in the 1992-95 conflict with the status of the civilian victims of war. Pročitaj više

The law proposal was assessed as a “step towards society free of prejudices and stigma.”

“This law is unique because it happens for the first time that children born as a result of the sexual violence in conflict are given rights, which finally means institutional end of silence and sends a message they are not alone,” said social welfare and labour minister Adnan Delic.

According to him, the law could provide a better status to the persons who were victims of sexual violence in conflict, as well.

To come into force, the law proposal needs to be endorsed in both chambers of the Federation Parliament.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has no official record on the number of children born as a result of sexual violence in conflict.

These children have no status of civilian victims of war neither in the Federation entity nor Republika Srpska entity.

As for Brcko District, its authorities adopted a law in 2022, giving this population the status of the civilian victims of war.
