Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) entity Prime Minister Nermin Niksic stated on Thursday in Sarajevo that while the concerns raised by US Democratic Congressman William Keating regarding the Southern Interconnection project were legitimate, official FBiH institutions must collaborate exclusively with official United States authorities rather than individual lawmakers or Congress directly.

Addressing media inquiries, Niksic highlighted that US cooperation and guidance were instrumental in securing the passage of the Interconnection Law and in resolving internal debates regarding whether to establish a joint company or an independent entity in Mostar.

"I consider it extremely positive that the US State Department has shown an interest in taking on this issue to overcome the problem. Of course, they did not adopt the law; the law was adopted by the FBiH Parliament almost unanimously, which means that we here assessed it as very important to cooperate with the United States," Niksic stated.

Beyond economic investment, Niksic underscored the broader geopolitical weight of the initiative, noting that the commander of NATO forces in Europe confirmed to him that the Southern Interconnection project integrates Bosnia into NATO's broader security umbrella.

"Of course, we also have experience from the 1992–1995 period, and it’s important that we strengthen our armed forces as well, but it’s also important to have such strong partners who will be there if something goes wrong," Niksic noted.
