Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina's Federation entity, Nermin Niksic, said on Thursday that Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik's announcement of the secession of the entity of Republika Srpska (RS) was creating a “risk of conflict and bloodshed with unforeseeable consequences.”
In an interview with the Serb entity RTRS broadcaster, Dodik said that the RS parliament will declare the entity's independence on the day High Representative for BiH Christian Schmidt imposes a law on the status of state property. He said that he has information a decision to that effect will be made in January and that the entity authorities have already prepared for such a scenario and will declare secession.
Niksic, who is also the leader of the SDP BiH party, which like Dodik's SNSD party is part of BiH's ruling coalition, has so far mostly avoided to react to verbal provocations by the Bosnian Serb leader, but on Thursday he said in a Facebook post that he had decided to respond, aware of the possible crisis.
“The act (secession) would result in unforeseeable consequences, primarily for the entity (Dodik) is in charge of and the people who he says he represents and about whose fate he allegedly cares. There is no doubt that BiH state institutions, BiH Federation institutions, BiH's international friends, primarily the USA, have a way of responding, without hesitation, to the first concrete secession move,” Niksic said.
Earlier in the day, BiH Federation entity Minister of Internal Affairs Ramo Isak, too, told Dodik in a message on social networks that he will be arrested the minute he tries to declare the RS's independence.
US Embassy in BiH also commented on the threats, saying that “Milorad Dodik is wrong if he thinks that the US will stand aside while he is pushing Bosnia and Herzegovina into a conflict.”
